I went to a breakfast salon today. A salon as in "A salon is a gathering of people under the roof of an inspiring host, held partly to amuse one another and partly to refine the taste and increase their knowledge of the participants through conversation. These gatherings often consciously followed Horace's definition of the aims of poetry, "either to please or to educate" ("aut delectare aut prodesse est"). Salons, commonly associated with French literary and philosophical movements of the 17th century and 18th centuries, were carried on until quite recently, in urban settings, among like-minded people." Thanks wikipedia.
A local couple host it every Friday AM in their house and it is open to anyone. Usually around 75-100 people show up. Breakfast is a $15 donation that you put in a mason jar on the table. All the ingredients are local, and a different chef volunteers. Today's was from Logan, a very schnazzy place. We had Oaxacan pulled pork tostadas with a fried egg and lime cilantro sour cream, delicious coffee and local apple cider.
The donation goes to supporting the local food movement. There was a CSA pickup going on in their driveway, and the front yard was a tomato jungle. They also had a big permanent sign saying 'jeff's bread' with a mailbox. Apparently, he makes homemade bread, sticks it in the mailbox, you check it randomly and if there is some in there, you take it and leave a donation.
Their house was amazing, and the kitchen had obviously been built for the purpose of hosting a ton of people. Their island was at least an 8 x 10 butcher block. There had to be at least 75 people there on this Friday morning.
This post is a part of my new series called all things very ann arbor where I will discuss female armpit hair, PTO activists who are also white rastas and why parents don't brush their kids hair ever. If you want to read more about the salon, here is me practicing hyperlinking again: Selma Cafe
